2015 District Winner

Trousdale County Schools

Trousdale County serves nearly 1,300 students at three schools in rural Middle Tennessee. Approximately 55 percent of Trousdale County’s students are economically disadvantaged. The district’s three-year average graduation rate is 97 percent. Over the past three years, Trousdale County has out-performed the state by roughly 20 points in math and Algebra I and II. Additionally, the district has made strong progress in closing gaps between economically disadvantaged students and their higher income peers in Algebra II.

2015 District Nominees

Dyersburg City Schools

The Dyersburg district serves roughly 2,800 students at four schools in northwest Tennessee. Approximately 70 percent of Dyersburg’s students are economically disadvantaged. The district has made strong gains over the past three years in math, Algebra I and Algebra II. Dyersburg’s three-year average ACT score is 20.5, more than 1 point above the state three-year average. In addition, the district has a roughly 60 percent AP exam pass rate and nearly two-thirds of Dyersburg’s graduates have gone on to college over the past three years.

Johnson City Schools

The Johnson City district serves nearly 8,000 students at 11 schools in East Tennessee. Approximately 50 percent of Johnson City’s students are economically disadvantaged. The district has made strong gains over the past three years in Algebra I and Algebra II. Johnson City’s three-year average ACT score is 22.0, almost 3 points above the state three-year average, and the district has a roughly 75 percent AP exam pass rate. In addition, district scores are almost 20 points above the state average in reading and English II as well as math and Algebra I and II. Over the past three years, Johnson City has closed gaps across almost all subjects for racial/ethnic subgroups and economically disadvantaged students.

Kingsport City Schools

Kingsport City Schools serves over 7,000 students in East Tennessee. Approximately 55 percent of Kingsport’s students are economically disadvantaged. The district posted strong three-year marks on TVAAS growth in math, Algebra I and II, and science: 3.6, 8.6, and 3.3, respectively. The district has an ACT average of 22 and has seen significant achievement gap closures between white students and their Hispanic and black peers.

Maryville City Schools

Maryville City Schools serves approximately 5,000 students in East Tennessee. Approximately 36 percent of Maryville’s students are economically disadvantaged. The district posted strong three-year marks on TVAAS growth in math and Algebra I and II: 4.1 and 9.8, respectively. The district has an average ACT score of 23.6 and an AP exam pass rate of 80 percent.

Williamson County Schools

Williamson County Schools serves nearly 34,000 students in Middle Tennessee. Approximately 10 percent of Williamson County’s students are economically disadvantaged. The district posted strong three-year marks on TVAAS growth in math and Algebra I and II: 3.9 and 10.8, respectively. The district has an average ACT score of 23.1 and an AP exam pass rate of 70 percent.

Trousdale County Schools

Trousdale County Schools, a district serving 1,200 students in Middle Tennessee, has made considerable gains over the past few years. Historically known for exceptional athletics, the district is now a statewide leader in teacher development and support, setting high standards for all students and encouraging students to prepare for college and the workforce.

Greeneville City Schools

Greeneville City Schools serves over 2,800 students in East Tennessee. Forty-eight percent of Greeneville City’s students are economically disadvantaged. The district posted strong three-year (2011-2013) marks on TVAAS growth in math and Algebra I: 8.3 and 9.3, respectively.

Kingsport City Schools

Kingsport City Schools is a district with early and ongoing opportunities for rigor and postsecondary readiness. Kingsport City Schools serves over 7,000 students in East Tennessee. Fifty-one percent of Kingsport City’s students are economically disadvantaged.

Hamblen County Schools

Hamblen County Schools serves 9,615 students in 18 schools in East Tennessee. The district has a three-year (2010-2012) TVAAS growth average of 19.1 in algebra I, meaning the district’s schools are helping its students make tremendous gains in that subject. The district also has a 61 percent pass rate on the AP exam.

Maryville City Schools

Maryville City Schools serves 4,915 students in seven schools in East Tennessee. The district has an ACT average score of 24 and an 80 percent college-going rate. Forty-four percent of the district’s high school students are enrolled in AP or IB courses. The district has an 82 percent pass rate on AP exams.

Tipton County Schools

Tipton County Schools, located in southwest Tennessee, serves 11,657 students in 14 schools. The district has an ACT average of 20, meaning the school is helping its students prepare for post-secondary. The district also has a 58 percent pass rate on Advanced Placement exams and a 62 percent college-going rate.

Maryville City School System

Maryville City Schools is composed of seven schools in East Tennessee. The district has a three-year (2009-2011) TVAAS standard t-statistic of 14.32 on math, which means their students are improving 14 times faster than the state average. The district also boasts a pass rate of 88.28 percent on AP exams.

Loudon County Schools

Loudon County Schools comprises nine schools in East Tennessee. Between 2010 and 2011, the district decreased its Hispanic-white achievement gap by 6.01 points on reading and 5.27 points on math. The district’sthree-year (2009-2011) TVAAS performance exceeded expectations in Algebra I, English I, English II, and U.S. History.

Williamson County School System

Williamson County School System is composed of 37 schools in Middle Tennessee. The district boasts a graduation rate of 93.9 percent and a college-going rate of 78.5 percent. They have a ACT Composite score of 22.7.
