2015 Elementary School Winner

Delano Optional School

Delano is a technology option school in Memphis that serves approximately 225 students in grades K-5. Roughly nine in ten students at Delano are economically disadvantaged. Delano students score well above the state average in both math and science and have made strong gains in math and science over the past three years.

Andersonville Elementary serves nearly 350 students in grades PK-5 in East Tennessee. Students at Andersonville score well above the state average on reading, math, and science and have shown strong gains across the subjects over three years. Andersonville has narrowed gaps between economically disadvantaged students and their higher income peers across reading, math, and science over the past three years.

Dresden Elementary, Weakley County Schools

Dresden Elementary serves nearly 500 students in grades PK-4 in rural, northwest Tennessee. The school has made strong gains across reading, math and science over the past three years. Approximately 70 percent of Dresden students are economically disadvantaged, and achievement gaps with higher-income peers have narrowed substantially over the past three years in reading, math, and science.

Dresden Elementary serves approximately 475 students in rural Weakley County in West Tennessee. Seventy percent of students are economically disadvantaged. The school posted high three-year (2012-2014) marks on TVAAS growth: 14.6 in math, 8.2 in reading, and 9.3 in science.

Highland Park Elementary serves more than 350 students in East Tennessee. Fifty-five percent of students are economically disadvantaged. The school posted strong three-year (2012-2014) marks on TVAAS growth: 11.6 in math, 7.6 in reading, and 5.6 in science.

Westwood Elementary, Manchester City Schools

Westwood Elementary serves more than 450 students in Middle Tennessee. Sixty-six percent of students are economically disadvantaged. The school posted strong three-year (2012-2014) marks on TVAAS growth: 12.5 in math, 4.1 in reading, and 10.2 in science.

Norman Smith Elementary

Norman Smith Elementary serves over 600 students in grades PK-5 in Middle Tennessee. Seventy-six percent of their students are economically disadvantaged. The school posted strong three-year (2011-2013) marks on TVAAS growth: 7.4 in math, 6.2 in reading, and 3.9 in science.

McPheeter’s Bend Elementary serves approximately 100 students in grades PK-4 in East Tennessee. Seventy-eight percent of McPheeter’s Bend students are economically disadvantaged. The school posted high three-year (2011-2013) marks on TVAAS growth: 11.5 in math, 13.6 in reading, and 6.4 in science.

Mt. Carmel Elementary, Hawkins County Schools

Mt. Carmel Elementary serves approximately 300 students in grades PK-4 in East Tennessee. Fifty-two percent of their students are economically disadvantaged. The school posted strong three-year (2011-2013) marks on TVAAS growth: 13.3 in math, 9.5 in reading, and 6.9 in science.

John Sevier Elementary School

John Sevier serves 548 students in pre-K through third grade in Maryville City Schools. John Sevier has narrowed the achievement gap between economically disadvantaged students and non-economically disadvantaged students by 7.1 percentage points in reading and 22.9 percentage points in math.

Boones Creek Elementary, Washington County Schools

Serving 448 students in kindergarten through fourth grade, Boones Creek Elementary is part of the Washington County School District. The school narrowed the achievement gap between economically disadvantaged students and non-economically disadvantaged students by 16.2 percentage points in math between 2010 and 2012.

Pigeon Forge Primary, Sevier County Schools

At Pigeon Forge Primary, 86 percent of the 599 pre-kindergarten through fourth grade students are economically disadvantaged. The Sevier County school has still been able to achieve a three-year (2010-2012) TVAAS growth average of 8.4 in math and 6.6 in reading, meaning the school is helping its students make tremendous gains in those subjects.

Fairview Elementary

Fairview Elementary is located in Heiskell, TN and is part of the Anderson County Schools system. The school has a three-year (2009-2011) TVAAS standard t-statistic of 14.01 on math, which means their students are improving 14 times faster than the state average.

Charlotte Elementary

Charlotte Elementary is located in Charlotte, TN and is part of the Dickson County Schools system. Between 2010 and 2011, Charlotte Elementary narrowed its achievement gap between economically disadvantaged and non-economically disadvantaged students by 13.89 points on the reading TCAP.

John Sevier Elementary

John Sevier Elementary is located in Maryville, TN and is part of the Maryville City Schools system. The school has a three year (2009-2011) TVAAS standard t-statistic of 10.55 on math, which means their students are improving more than 10 times faster than the state average.
