2015 High School Winner

The Soulsville Charter School

The Soulsville Charter School serves close to 600 students in grades 6-12 in Memphis. Roughly 80 percent of students at Soulsville are economically disadvantaged. Students have made noteworthy gains in Algebra I and II as well as strong gains in English II and Biology over the past three years. Almost 80 percent of students have gone on to college over the past three years.

Covington High School, Tipton County Schools

Covington serves nearly 750 students in grades 9-12 in Covington, a small town northeast of Memphis. Covington’s students have made strong gains in English II and tremendous gains in Algebra I and II over the past three years. Gains in Algebra scores have occurred at the same time as narrowing of gaps in between economically disadvantaged students and their higher-income peers in Algebra. Roughly 70 percent of students are economically disadvantaged.

Martin Luther King Jr. Magnet School, Metro Nashville Public Schools

MLK Magnet is a middle and high school, serving approximately 800 students in grades 9-12 in Nashville. Roughly 30 percent of students are economically disadvantaged. Nearly 100 percent of students score proficient or advanced on end of course exams in English II, Algebra I and II and Biology. MLK boasts a tremendous college going culture – students have an average ACT score of 25.8 over three years, 100 percent of students graduate high school within four years, and more than 90 percent go on to college.

Covington High School

Covington High School serves approximately 725 students in grades 9-12 in Tipton County in West Tennessee. Approximately 72 percent of their students are economically disadvantaged. The school achieved strong three-year marks on TVAAS growth: 40.8 in Algebra I and II, 9.2 in English II, and 3.1 in Biology I. Covington has seen positive growth in ACT scores and college going over the past three years.

Martin Luther King, Jr. High School, Metropolitan Nashville Public Schools

Martin Luther King High School serves approximately 850 students in grades 9-12 in Nashville. Approximately 36 percent of students are economically disadvantaged. The school posted strong three-year marks on TVAAS growth in Algebra I and II of 23.2. In addition, MLK students post an average ACT score of 25.9, the school boasts a 100 percent graduation rate, and nearly all students score proficient or advanced on state assessments.

Ravenwood High School, Williamson County Schools

Ravenwood High School serves more than 1,900 students in grades 9-12 in Brentwood. Approximately 2 percent of students are economically disadvantaged. The school posted strong three-year marks on TVAAS growth: 31.0 in Algebra I, 4.0 in English II, and 5.9 in Biology I. Ravenwood has a high ACT average of 24.5 and an AP exam pass rate of 79 percent.

Covington High School, located in Tipton County, has an enrollment of nearly 750 students and an outstanding graduation rate of 97 percent. On the TVAAS, Covington has achieved one of the highest Algebra I scores in the state, with growth at 49.3.

Maryville High School has a tradition of excellence that stems from a long history of high community expectations. It serves over 1,050 students in grades 10-12 in Maryville.

Oak Ridge High School, Oak Ridge Schools

Oak Ridge is a school that has a high level of rigor and expects all students to engage with challenging coursework. It serves approximately 1,350 students in grades 9-12 in Oak Ridge.

Covington High School

Covington High School has increased its college-going rate by 10 percentage points between 2009 and 2010. The school also has a three-year (2010-2012) TVAAS average of 50.7 in algebra I, meaning the school is helping its students make tremendous gains in that subject.

Fayette-Ware Comprehensive High School, Fayette County Schools

Part of rural Fayette County Schools, Fayette-Ware Comprehensive High School serves 879 ninth through 12th grade students. The high school has narrowed the achievement gap between economically disadvantaged and non-economically disadvantaged students by 23 percentage points in English II and 21.3 percentage points in Algebra I between 2010 and 2012.

Ravenwood High School, Williamson County Schools

Ravenwood High School serves 1,852 ninth through 12th grade students in Williamson County. The school has a three-year (2010-2012) value-added growth average of 24.2 in algebra I, meaning the school is helping its students make tremendous gains in that subject. The school has a 73 percent pass rate on Advanced Placement exams and an 86 percent college-going rate.

Mt Juliet High School

Mt. Juliet High School is located in Mt. Juliet, TN and is part of the Wilson County Schools system. The school has an ACT composite score of 21.0 and their 2009-2011 TVAAS performance exceeded expectations in all five End of Course exams: Algebra I, Biology I, English I, English II, and U.S. History.
