The Soulsville Charter School
The Soulsville Charter School serves close to 600 students in grades 6-12 in Memphis. Roughly 80 percent of students at Soulsville are economically disadvantaged. Students have made noteworthy gains in Algebra I and II as well as strong gains in English II and Biology over the past three years. Almost 80 percent of students have gone on to college over the past three years.

Covington High School, Tipton County Schools
Covington serves nearly 750 students in grades 9-12 in Covington, a small town northeast of Memphis. Covington’s students have made strong gains in English II and tremendous gains in Algebra I and II over the past three years. Gains in Algebra scores have occurred at the same time as narrowing of gaps in between economically disadvantaged students and their higher-income peers in Algebra. Roughly 70 percent of students are economically disadvantaged.
Martin Luther King Jr. Magnet School, Metro Nashville Public Schools
MLK Magnet is a middle and high school, serving approximately 800 students in grades 9-12 in Nashville. Roughly 30 percent of students are economically disadvantaged. Nearly 100 percent of students score proficient or advanced on end of course exams in English II, Algebra I and II and Biology. MLK boasts a tremendous college going culture – students have an average ACT score of 25.8 over three years, 100 percent of students graduate high school within four years, and more than 90 percent go on to college.

Covington High School serves approximately 725 students in grades 9-12 in Tipton County in West Tennessee. Approximately 72 percent of their students are economically disadvantaged. The school achieved strong three-year marks on TVAAS growth: 40.8 in Algebra I and II, 9.2 in English II, and 3.1 in Biology I. Covington has seen positive growth in ACT scores and college going over the past three years.

Martin Luther King High School serves approximately 850 students in grades 9-12 in Nashville. Approximately 36 percent of students are economically disadvantaged. The school posted strong three-year marks on TVAAS growth in Algebra I and II of 23.2. In addition, MLK students post an average ACT score of 25.9, the school boasts a 100 percent graduation rate, and nearly all students score proficient or advanced on state assessments.

Seventy-four percent of their students are economically disadvantaged. The school posted strong three-year marks on TVAAS growth: 49.3 in Algebra I, 8.7 in English II, and 5.5 in Biology I. Covington has among the highest Algebra I TVAAS growth scores in the state. Strong leaders and dedicated teachers are the key to Covington’s success. Covington has an expectation that all students will go on to college or a meaningful career and has many programs in place that help students to achieve these goals.

Overview:
Fayette-Ware Comprehensive High School’s motto is “Proud, Passionate, Prepared.” Located in rural Somerville, Fayette-Ware demonstrated strong overall TVAAS growth and significant achievement gap closures. The gap for economically disadvantaged students narrowed by 23 percentage points in English II and 21.3 percentage points in Algebra I. The achievement gap for black students in Algebra I also narrowed by 28 points. Student “scholars” and teacher “performance coaches” form strong bonds at Fayette-Ware. Building on structures put in place by former Principal Sonny Hicks, high expectations for teachers translate into similarly high expectations for students. Through professional learning communities that build on practices such as relationship building and response to intervention, teachers at Fayette-Ware built “Hicks’s House.” The caring faculty and staff instill in students a desire to learn, and data enables them to push those students and maximize the impact of their programs and activities. In doing so, they are “Protecting the House,” and also building foundations for their students’ futures.
